{"id":1292,"date":"2024-04-15T21:11:27","date_gmt":"2024-04-15T19:11:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gender101.eu\/en\/?p=1292"},"modified":"2024-04-22T09:05:56","modified_gmt":"2024-04-22T07:05:56","slug":"what-is-gender-neutral-language","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gender101.eu\/what-is-gender-neutral-language\/","title":{"rendered":"What is gender neutral language?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gender101.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/14-What-is-Gender-Neutral-language-1024x681.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1410\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Gender-neutral language, also called non-sexist, gender-inclusive, or non-gender-specific language, refers to language that includes words or expressions that cannot be taken to refer to one gender only.<br>This kind of language avoids bias against a particular sex or gender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>It has to be highlighted that in English, there is a difference between \u201cgrammatical gender\u201d, \u201cgender as a social construct\u201d (which refers to the roles, behaviours, activities and attributes that a given society at a certain time considers appropriate for men or women) and \u201csex\u201d as a biological characteristic of living beings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Nonetheless, still today, there is in Italy a question of non-recognition of people with non-binary gender identities from a legal and social point of view. It is interesting to notice that in the Italian language recent efforts for a more inclusive language has been done. In fact, a research for suitable expressions to represent people who do not recognize themselves in the gender binary is underway at the moment, to the scope of promoting a language that will be more respectful of diversity and inclusive of all genders. Contrary to English, apparently a less gendered language, the Italian language is indeed a gendered language that declines subjects, verbs, articles and adjectives in a binary way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>For the written language and for inclusive purposes, at the moment, the most commonly used representation is Schwa (\u0259), the letter \u2018E\u2019 of the international phonetic alphabet, reversed by 180\u00b0.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gender-neutral language, also called non-sexist, gender-inclusive, or non-gender-specific language, refers to language that includes words or expressions that cannot be taken to refer to one gender only.This kind of language avoids bias against a particular sex or gender.
